A Private 8-Weekend Skills Workshop at Advanced Car Stereo Riverside

A private, hands-on skills workshop. 8 weeks, one Saturday per week, 5 hours per session. Held inside a working car audio shop that has operated at the same Riverside, California location for over 35 years.

Why we created this workshop

Walk into any car audio shop today and you will find a problem the industry rarely talks about: there is no easy, accessible path for the next generation of installers to learn the craft. YouTube tutorials skip steps. Manufacturers offer training tied only to their own product lines. Trade schools rarely cover 12V mobile electronics in any depth.

The result? Installs that look fine on the surface but fail in six months — rattling panels, ground loops, voltage drops on big amplifiers, backup cameras that quit when it rains, wiring runs that overheat because someone used 8-gauge cable on a 2,000-watt system that needed zero-gauge.

Advanced Car Stereo Riverside has installed audio, lighting, security, and mobile electronics in IE for over three and a half decades — same location, same standards. We have trained installers internally over the years. This workshop is our way of opening that bench up to motivated people who want exposure to the right way of doing the work, from people who do it for a living, in a working shop with real customer-style vehicles.

Who this workshop is designed for

This program is designed for adults (18+) with some baseline familiarity with cars and basic hand tools, who want serious hands-on exposure. It is a strong fit for:

  • Aspiring car audio installers who want shop-floor exposure before applying for jobs in the industry
  • Detailers, tinters, body shop techs, and mechanics wanting to add 12V install skills to broaden what they can offer
  • Serious enthusiasts who plan to build out their own vehicles to a professional standard rather than guess their way through it
  • Shop owners and managers who want a clearer understanding of what their installers actually do and why

You do not need prior installation experience. You do need to be 18 or older, physically capable of working on vehicles (lifting, crouching, running wire), willing to learn from mistakes, and committed to showing up on time every Saturday for eight weeks.

What you will do — week by week

This is a working syllabus. Specific content may shift slightly based on the vehicles available in the shop and what comes through the door. The Provider determines all content at its sole discretion.

Week 1 — Tools, safety, and the anatomy of a vehicle

  • The professional installer’s tool kit: panel poppers, trim removal kits, multimeters, crimpers, heat guns, soldering stations, scan tools — what each is for and how to use it without damaging the vehicle
  • Vehicle disassembly fundamentals: door panels, dash kits, headliners, kick panels, trunk and hatch trim — how to pop them, label them, and reassemble without rattles
  • Shop safety, lift safety, battery safety, ESD precautions
  • Electrical fundamentals: voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s Law applied in install context

Week 2 — Power, ground, and the wiring that holds it all together

  • Reading and creating wiring diagrams
  • Selecting the correct gauge: when 8-gauge is enough, when you need 4-gauge, and when only zero-gauge will do — including the math behind voltage drop and current draw
  • Battery connections: terminals, distribution blocks, fuses, fuse holders, ANL vs MIDI vs AGU
  • Ground points: why “any unpainted metal” is wrong, how to find true chassis ground, and why a clean ground is half the battle
  • Running wire through firewalls, under carpet, and through door boots without damaging insulation or jambs

Week 3 — Stereo head units, integration, and signal flow

  • Aftermarket head unit installation in modern vehicles
  • Dash kits, antenna adapters, harness adapters, integration modules
  • Steering wheel control retention
  • Bypassing or interfacing with factory amplifiers
  • Signal flow from source unit through processors and amplifiers to speakers

Week 4 — Speakers, connectors, and tuning the front stage

  • Speaker types: component sets vs coaxials, tweeters, midbass drivers, subwoofers
  • Crossover design fundamentals (passive, active, in-line)
  • Connector standards and crimping technique — why a bad crimp is worse than no crimp
  • Speaker placement, baffles, sound deadening
  • Phase, polarity, and why two speakers wired backwards sound worse than one alone

Week 5 — Amplifiers and bass: doing big power right

  • Amplifier classes (A, AB, D) and what they mean for output, efficiency, and heat
  • Mono vs multi-channel — picking the right amp for the job
  • Subwoofer enclosure types: sealed, ported, bandpass — and the math behind each
  • Setting gains correctly with a digital multimeter or oscilloscope (not by ear)
  • Bridging, strapping, and parallel/series wiring of subwoofers
  • 1-channel, 2-channel, 4-channel, and 5-channel amplifier configurations

Week 6 — Backup cameras, lighting, and accessory installation

  • Backup camera installation: trigger wires, reverse lights, mirror displays, tailgate harnesses, weather sealing
  • LED lighting: interior, exterior, underglow — fusing, switching, and CAN bus issues
  • Dash cam installation: hardwiring vs cigarette plug, parking mode, fuse tap selection
  • Motorcycle audio installation overview (if applicable)
  • Remote starts and security systems — overview of theory and integration points only; full alarm and remote-start work is a specialty area we touch but do not cover in depth

Week 7 — DSP, signal processing, and tuning the system

  • What a digital signal processor actually does
  • Time alignment, equalization, and crossover tuning
  • Different levels of DSP — from basic 4-channel units to full 12+ channel processors
  • Using an RTA (real-time analyzer) and pink noise to tune a vehicle
  • Listening tests and the discipline of trusting measurement over memory

Week 8 — Troubleshooting, final builds, and program close

  • Diagnostic methodology: how a professional installer narrows down a problem (no power, low output, alternator whine, ground loop, blown fuse, dead amp, intermittent failure)
  • Using a multimeter, oscilloscope, and your ears as diagnostic tools
  • Final hands-on build: each participant completes a guided install in a shop vehicle from scratch — head unit, amp, sub, speakers, signal processor — and tunes the system
  • Course wrap-up, Q&A with shop staff, take-home reference materials

Both run on consecutive days and are taught in the same hands-on style as the main workshop. Each has its own separate participation agreement.

  • It is a working shop, not a classroom. You will work on real customer-style vehicles, with real parts, in a real shop environment. There is no simulator, no demo bench, no theory-only week.
  • You learn from people who do it every day. Our lead instructors are working installers who are still on the floor the other six days of the week. The information is current.
