SPL System for Dodge Ram Truck: Custom Bass Built Around Your Ram

Custom SPL system with four 8-inch subwoofers in a Dodge Ram truck at Advanced Car Stereo Riverside

Putting serious bass in a Dodge Ram is not like putting bass in a car, an SUV, or even most other trucks. There’s no trunk. There’s very little space behind the rear seat. And on many Ram crew cabs, the space under the rear seat is already taken by factory storage cubbies and in-floor bins. That means the usual “drop a sub box in the back” approach simply doesn’t work. At Advanced Car Stereo Riverside, we’ve become Ram truck SPL specialists because we do the engineering it takes to make a big system fit: we re-engineer and reconfigure the truck’s interior so the enclosure, the subs, the amplifiers and the electrical system all have a proper home.

In this guide we break down the build in our latest video, explain why Ram trucks are so challenging for SPL systems, and walk through the engineering that goes into a high-output truck system done right. And right now you can get 10% off your full SPL sound system, with financing options available.

What is an SPL system?

SPL stands for sound pressure level, measured in decibels (dB). In car audio, an “SPL system” is a build designed for maximum output: deep, loud, physical bass you feel in your chest, not just hear. That’s different from a “sound quality” (SQ) build, which prioritizes accuracy and imaging over raw volume. Most of our customers want both, and a well-engineered system delivers clean, detailed vocals up front with big, controlled bass behind them.

A few numbers help explain why SPL is an engineering challenge:

  • Every +3 dB needs double the power. To get 3 dB louder with the same speakers, you need twice the amplifier power. That’s why SPL builds move into thousands of watts.
  • Every +6 dB doubles the pressure. Adding more cone area (more subwoofers) and a properly tuned enclosure is often a more efficient way to gain output than power alone.
  • Power has to come from somewhere. A 5,000-watt amplifier can pull far more current than a factory charging system was designed to supply. Without electrical upgrades, voltage drops, lights dim, and the amp can’t deliver what it’s rated for.

So an SPL system is not just “big subs and a big amp”. It’s a complete system: speakers, amplifier, enclosure, wiring and charging, all engineered to work together inside your specific vehicle.

The build in our video: an SPL system for a Dodge Ram

Here’s what went into the Ram in our Short:

  • Four 8-inch Hippo subwoofers, each rated at 800 watts RMS, for 3,200 watts RMS of combined subwoofer power handling.
  • A Hippo 5,000-watt amplifier, set up and gain-matched to the subs.
  • Six 6.5-inch Gold Series speakers plus upgraded dash speakers to bring the vocals and detail, so the system isn’t all bass.
  • A custom enclosure designed around the Ram’s cab.
  • Zero (1/0) gauge power wiring.
  • An extra battery and an upgraded high-output alternator to support the power demand.

Why four 8s instead of one or two big 15s? Because in a Ram cab, space is the limiting factor. Four 8-inch subs give a combined cone area of roughly the same as two 12-inch subs, but they can be arranged in a shallow, wide enclosure that fits where a deep 12 or 15 box never could. Smaller subs also respond quickly, which keeps the bass tight and punchy. Designing around the vehicle, rather than forcing a “standard” setup into it, is the core of how we build.

Why Ram trucks are different: cubbies, bins and no room for a normal box

This is the part most people don’t expect. If you walk into a typical shop and ask for subs in your Ram, you’ll often hear “we’ll just put a box behind the seat” or “we’ll use a prefab under-seat box”. In many Ram trucks, that simply won’t work.

Factory storage takes the space

Ram designed its crew cabs to be practical. Depending on the year and trim, the rear of the cab can include in-floor storage bins, under-seat cubbies and storage compartments built into the rear floor and seat area. That’s great for hiding tools and gear, but it means the space under the rear seat, where most trucks would take an under-seat sub enclosure, is already occupied by molded plastic bins and the floor structure around them.

There’s no “behind the seat” space

Unlike a car with a trunk or an SUV with a cargo area, a truck cab ends right behind the rear seat. There is no trunk to fill with a box, and the rear wall leaves almost no depth. Prefab truck boxes are built for “average” trucks and very often don’t fit a Ram correctly, or they fit only by giving up so much airspace that the subs can’t perform.

Fit and finish matter

A Ram is often a customer’s daily driver and work truck, and the interior is part of what they paid for. A system that blocks the seats, rattles the trim, or looks like an afterthought isn’t acceptable. The system has to look like it belongs in the truck.

The answer is engineering. To fit a real SPL system in a Ram, we have to reconfigure the truck’s interior: remove or modify the factory bins and cubbies, reshape how the rear floor and seat area are used, and build a custom enclosure that uses every available inch. That’s why every one of our Ram SPL builds is unique, and why it takes a shop with real engineering experience to do it right.

How we engineer an SPL system for a Ram truck

Here’s how our team approaches a Ram SPL build from start to finish.

1. Consultation and goals

We start with you: what music you listen to, how loud you want it, whether you need to keep rear seating or storage, and your budget. A truck that carries a crew every day needs a different design than a show truck. We’ll also talk about the year, cab style and trim of your Ram, because the interior layout changes across generations.

2. Measuring and mapping the interior

We measure the cab in detail: the rear floor, the seat frame, the cubbies and bins, the rear wall, and every bracket and wire harness in the area. This tells us exactly how much usable space we can create, and where.

3. Reconfiguring the interior

This is where Ram builds become unique. Depending on the plan, we may remove or modify factory storage bins, rework mounting points, and reshape panels so the enclosure can sit low and solid. The goal is to create space for the system while keeping the truck functional, safe and clean-looking.

4. Enclosure design

The enclosure is the most important part of an SPL system. A subwoofer is only as good as the box it’s in. We design the enclosure around:

  • Net internal volume: each sub needs the right amount of airspace, after subtracting the space taken by the subs themselves, bracing and any port.
  • Sealed vs. ported: a sealed box is compact and tight; a ported box tuned to the right frequency gives much more output in the range where it’s tuned. For SPL, ported designs are common, but the port takes space, which matters in a Ram.
  • Tuning frequency: we choose a tuning that matches your music and the truck’s cabin, so the bass is loud where you want it and doesn’t fall apart on low notes.
  • Bracing and material: high-output systems create huge pressure inside the box. Thick MDF, solid bracing and proper sealing prevent flex and air leaks that waste output and cause buzzing.
  • Cabin gain: a truck cab is a small space, which naturally boosts low frequencies. We take that into account so the system sounds deep and even rather than boomy.

5. Amplifier and gain matching

The video build uses a 5,000-watt amplifier on four subs rated at 800 watts RMS each. Matching the amplifier to the subs is critical. We wire the subs to the correct final impedance for the amp, then set the gain with proper tools instead of “by ear”. A gain set too high sends clipped (distorted) signal to the subs, which is the number one way to burn up a subwoofer. Set correctly, the subs get clean power and can play hard for years.

6. Speakers and front stage

Big bass with weak door speakers sounds unbalanced. That’s why this build includes six 6.5-inch speakers and upgraded dash speakers. We often add sound deadening to the doors to reduce rattles and improve mid-bass, and we use crossovers so each speaker plays only the frequencies it handles best. The result is clear vocals and detail that keep up with the subs.

7. Electrical: the foundation of every SPL build

Power is where many SPL systems go wrong. Big amplifiers draw big current, and a factory charging system isn’t built for it. Our electrical upgrades can include:

  • Zero (1/0) gauge power and ground wiring sized for the amplifier’s current draw, with proper fusing near the battery for safety.
  • The “Big 3” upgrade: upgrading the alternator-to-battery positive, battery-to-chassis ground, and engine-to-chassis ground cables so current flows with less resistance.
  • A high-output alternator that can keep up with the system’s demand while the truck is running.
  • An additional battery to supply peak current during heavy bass notes and stabilize voltage.

Stable voltage means the amp delivers its rated power, the lights don’t dim, and the truck’s own electronics stay protected. This is the kind of work that separates a professional SPL build from a weekend project.

8. Integration with your factory radio or a new head unit

Many Ram owners want to keep their factory touchscreen. We can integrate the system with the factory radio using the proper interfaces and signal processing, or we can upgrade to a new screen. Ask us about our T-style radio upgrades for trucks and Apple CarPlay and screen upgrades.

9. Tuning, testing and finishing

Once everything is installed, we tune the system: crossovers, levels, bass boost (used carefully, if at all), and time alignment where available. We check voltage under load, listen for rattles, and make sure the trim goes back on tight and clean. Then we test it again before you pick it up.

Common mistakes we fix in truck SPL systems

We see a lot of truck systems come in that were installed elsewhere. Here are the most common problems:

  • A box that’s too small. Squeezing subs into an enclosure with too little airspace kills output and can damage the subs.
  • Undersized wiring. A big amp on small wire overheats the wire and starves the amp of current. It’s both a performance and a safety issue.
  • No charging upgrades. Dimming headlights, a battery that keeps dying, and amps going into protect mode are classic signs.
  • Gains set too high. Clipping is the most common reason subs fail.
  • Rattles everywhere. Without sound deadening and secure trim, a powerful system shakes the truck apart instead of playing clean bass.
  • A system that doesn’t fit the truck. Boxes that block seats or are bolted in loosely aren’t just ugly; they’re unsafe in a sudden stop.

Why Ram owners choose Advanced Car Stereo Riverside

Anyone can sell a sub and an amp. Fitting a true SPL system in a Ram truck, with the interior reconfigured, a custom enclosure, and the electrical system to support it, takes engineering. That’s what we do every day, and it’s why we consider ourselves Riverside’s SPL and Ram truck specialists.

  • Engineering first. Every build starts with measurements, a plan and an enclosure designed for your truck, not a one-size-fits-all box.
  • Custom fabrication in-house. We build the enclosures and reconfigure the interior ourselves, so the system fits and finishes like it came from the factory.
  • Trained technicians. We take installation standards so seriously that we host MECP training and car audio installation workshops at our shop.
  • Complete systems. Subs, amps, speakers, wiring, batteries, alternators, radios and tuning, all planned together under one roof.

  • Flexible payment. With our financing and leasing options and no credit check programs, the system you want doesn’t have to wait.
  • Open 7 days a week. We work around your schedule.

Choosing the right SPL setup for your Ram

Every truck and every customer is different. Here are the main options we discuss:

  • Four 8s: a great fit for Ram cabs where depth is limited. Fast, punchy bass with plenty of total cone area, like the build in our video.
  • Two or four 10s: more low-end extension and output if we can create enough space, often by reconfiguring more of the rear interior.
  • Two 12s: big output for customers willing to give up more rear storage or seating space.
  • Stealth builds: for customers who want good bass but need to keep the interior looking stock, we design hidden enclosures that keep the cab usable.

We’ll tell you honestly which option fits your truck and goals, and what trade-offs come with each.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a regular under-seat sub box in my Ram?

In many Ram crew cabs, no. The factory storage bins and cubbies take up the space where an under-seat box would go, and prefab boxes rarely fit correctly. We reconfigure the interior and build a custom enclosure so the system fits properly.

Will I lose my rear seat?

Not necessarily. Many of our designs keep the rear seat fully usable. If you want maximum output, we’ll show you the options and the trade-offs before we build anything.

Do I need a second battery and a new alternator?

For a high-power system like the one in our video, yes, we strongly recommend it. Electrical upgrades let the amplifier deliver its full power and protect your truck’s electrical system.

Will it work with my factory radio?

Yes, in most cases. We use the right interfaces and processing to integrate with the factory system, or we can upgrade your radio if you prefer.

How long does an SPL build take?

It depends on the design. A custom Ram build with interior reconfiguration, fabrication and electrical upgrades usually takes longer than a simple install. We’ll give you a clear timeline when we plan your system.

Can I finance my system?

Yes. See our financing and leasing options, including no credit check programs. Financing is subject to approval.
