Michelin vs Pirelli vs BFGoodrich: Choosing the Right Tires in Riverside

Four vehicle tires

Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road. Every bit of acceleration, braking, steering and comfort passes through four contact patches about the size of your hand. That is why choosing tires is one of the most important decisions you make for your car, truck or SUV, and why brand, model and size matter so much. At Advanced Car Stereo Riverside, we sell, mount, balance and align tires from the world’s leading brands, including Michelin, Pirelli, BFGoodrich, Continental, Bridgestone, Nitto and Toyo, and we help you choose the right tire for how you actually drive.

This guide explains how to read a tire, the main tire categories, what each major brand is known for from value to luxury, and how we install tires the right way. You can spread the cost of a full set with our financing options.

How to read a tire sidewall

Take a size like 275/55R20 117T:

  • 275 is the tire’s width in millimeters.
  • 55 is the aspect ratio: the sidewall height is 55% of the width.
  • R means radial construction.
  • 20 is the wheel diameter in inches.
  • 117 is the load index, the maximum weight each tire can carry.
  • T is the speed rating, the maximum sustained speed the tire is designed for.

Off-road tires are often sized differently, such as 35×12.50R20, where 35 is the overall diameter in inches and 12.50 is the width. You will also see LT (light truck) tires with load ranges like E or F for heavy-duty trucks, and the DOT date code, which tells you when the tire was made. Tires age even when they are not used, so we always check the date.

UTQG ratings

Passenger tires also carry Uniform Tire Quality Grading: treadwear (a relative number; higher usually lasts longer), traction (AA, A, B, C for wet braking) and temperature (A, B, C for heat resistance).

Tire categories explained

Touring and grand touring

Quiet, comfortable, long-lasting tires for sedans, minivans and crossovers.

All-season and performance all-season

Balanced tires for year-round driving in Southern California. Performance all-season tires add sharper handling.

Ultra-high performance (UHP) and max performance summer

Soft compounds and stiff construction for maximum grip, steering response and braking. Ideal for sports cars and performance sedans in our warm climate.

Highway terrain

Quiet, long-wearing truck and SUV tires built for pavement and towing.

All-terrain

A balance of on-road manners and off-road traction, with tougher sidewalls and more aggressive tread. The most popular choice for trucks and Jeeps that see dirt on the weekends.

Rugged terrain and mud-terrain

Aggressive tread and very strong construction for serious off-roading, rocks and mud. Louder and heavier on the road, but unstoppable on the trail.

EV tires

Electric vehicles are heavy and deliver instant torque. EV-specific tires add load capacity, low rolling resistance and noise-reducing foam. See our full list of EV services.

Tire brands compared, from value to luxury

Michelin

Michelin is known for long tread life, comfort, wet grip and consistent quality. The Defender line is a favorite for long-lasting touring tires, the CrossClimate series offers excellent all-weather performance, the Pilot Sport 4S is a benchmark max-performance tire used on many high-end cars, and the Pilot Sport EV is designed for electric vehicles. Defender LTX is a top choice for trucks and SUVs. Michelin tires often cost more up front but deliver value over their life.

Pirelli

Pirelli is the Italian brand of choice for many luxury and exotic automakers, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Maserati and many AMG and M models, often with tires developed specifically for each car. The P Zero family is legendary for max performance, the Cinturato line covers touring, and the Scorpion line serves SUVs and trucks, including the Scorpion All Terrain Plus. If you drive a luxury or performance vehicle, Pirelli is often the original equipment.

BFGoodrich

BFGoodrich is an off-road legend. The All-Terrain T/A KO2 (and its successor, the KO3) is one of the most popular all-terrain tires ever made, known for tough sidewalls and long life. The Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 is built for serious off-road use, and the Trail-Terrain T/A offers a quieter, more road-focused option. BFGoodrich also makes the g-Force performance line.

Continental

Continental is a German brand known for excellent wet and dry braking and refined ride quality. The ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus is one of the best performance all-season tires available, and the TerrainContact line covers trucks and SUVs.

Bridgestone

Bridgestone offers a broad range, from the comfortable Turanza and long-lasting Alenza for SUVs to the Potenza performance line. Its Firestone brand offers solid value.

Nitto

Nitto is a favorite in the truck and performance communities. The Ridge Grappler hybrid tire and Terra Grappler G2 all-terrain look aggressive and ride well, while the NT555 G2 and NT05 are popular for performance cars and drag racing.

Toyo

Toyo’s Open Country line, including the A/T III, R/T Trail and M/T, is one of the most respected in off-road, while the Proxes line serves performance and luxury cars.

Value brands

For budget-conscious drivers, we also offer quality value tires. We will always tell you honestly where a premium tire pays off and where a value tire makes sense.

The luxury choice

On luxury and exotic vehicles, the right choice is often the manufacturer-approved tire, marked with codes such as N0 (Porsche), MO (Mercedes), star (BMW) or AO (Audi). These tires are tuned for that specific vehicle’s suspension and handling. We help you find the correct approved fitment.

Choosing the right tire: questions we ask

  • What vehicle do you drive, and what do you use it for (commuting, towing, off-road, track days)?
  • What matters most: comfort, quiet, tread life, grip or looks?
  • Are you changing wheel size or adding a lift or leveling kit?
  • How many miles do you drive per year?
  • What is your budget, and would financing let you choose the tire you really want?

How we install tires

  1. Inspection. We check the wheels, valve stems, TPMS sensors and suspension for problems before mounting.
  2. Wheel-safe mounting. We use equipment that protects expensive and large-diameter wheels; read about our Hunter Revolution tire changer.
  3. New valve stems and TPMS service. We service or replace TPMS components and relearn the sensors.
  4. Precision balancing. We balance each tire and wheel assembly on modern equipment to eliminate vibration.
  5. Correct inflation. We set pressures to the vehicle’s placard or the correct values for your tire and load.
  6. Torque. Lug nuts are torqued to specification in the correct pattern.
  7. Alignment. New tires deserve an alignment. See why you need alignment and balance.

Tire care that pays off

Check tire pressure monthly, especially as temperatures change. Rotate tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or as the manufacturer recommends. Watch for uneven wear, which often means an alignment or suspension problem. Replace tires when tread reaches 2/32″, and much sooner for wet-weather safety, and replace aging tires even if tread remains.

Tires for lifted trucks and towing

Lifted trucks and trucks that tow have special tire needs. Larger tires (33″, 35″, 37″ and beyond) are heavier, change your effective gear ratio, affect your speedometer and put more stress on brakes and steering. Load range matters: a heavy-duty truck that tows a trailer needs LT tires with a load range E or F, not passenger tires. Tire pressure must match the load, which is often higher than people expect when towing. When we plan a lift, we plan the tire size, load rating, speedometer recalibration and alignment together. See our off-road lift kit guide and leveling kit guide.

Common tire mistakes

  • Buying by price alone instead of matching the tire to the vehicle and driving style.
  • Wrong load index on heavy SUVs, EVs and trucks.
  • Old “new” tires that sat in a warehouse for years; always check the DOT date code.
  • Skipping alignment with new tires, which can ruin them in a few thousand miles.
  • Ignoring pressure; under-inflation is the number one cause of premature wear and blowouts.
  • Mixing tread designs on all-wheel-drive vehicles, which can damage the drivetrain.

Tires and road noise

If your cabin is noisy, the tires may be the cause. Aggressive all-terrain and mud-terrain tires are louder than highway tires, and worn or cupped tires get louder over time. Some premium tires include noise-reducing foam. Pairing quieter tires with sound deadening makes a big difference in cabin comfort and in how good your audio system sounds.

Tire warranties and road hazard protection

Most major brands offer a treadwear warranty, often from 40,000 to 80,000 miles or more on touring and highway tires, and shorter or none on max-performance and mud-terrain tires. To keep that warranty valid, tires need regular rotation, correct inflation and proper alignment, which is another reason a professional installation matters. Road hazard protection covers damage from nails, potholes and debris. We explain the warranty on every tire we sell, so you know what is covered before you buy.

Seasonal tips for Inland Empire drivers

Our climate is hard on tires, and a little attention goes a long way. Summer heat raises tire pressure and accelerates wear, especially on hot freeways and desert trips. Check pressure in the morning before driving. Before a trip to the mountains in winter, make sure your tires have enough tread for wet and cold roads, and carry chains when required.

Frequently asked questions

Are premium tires worth it?

Often, yes. Premium tires usually stop shorter, especially in the wet, last longer and ride quieter. Over the life of the tire, the cost difference can be small.

Can I mix tire brands?

It is best to keep the same tire on all four corners, and it is required on many all-wheel-drive vehicles.

What size can I fit with a leveling kit?

It depends on the truck. We check fitment and explain what fits without rubbing.

Do you install tires I bought online?

Yes. We mount, balance and align tires purchased elsewhere.

Can I finance tires?

Yes. See our financing options and no credit check programs. Financing is subject to approval.

What makes us different: Riverside’s only shop with its own installer school

Choosing and installing tires sounds simple until you account for load ratings, TPMS, balancing, alignment and the specific needs of luxury and heavy vehicles. Training is the difference.

We are the only shop in Riverside that runs its own hands-on installer school. Our Master Car Audio Installation Boot Camp teaches students the craft inside our working shop: power and ground, wire gauge and voltage-drop math, signal flow, amplifier classes and gain setting with a meter, enclosure design, DSP tuning with an RTA, and professional troubleshooting. We also run car audio installation workshops, 3-day window tint and vehicle wrap courses, and MECP training.

Why does that matter to you as a customer? Because a shop that teaches the trade has to master it first. Every method we teach is a method we use on your vehicle, and our instructors are working installers who are on the shop floor the rest of the week. When you have to explain to a classroom why a connection, a fuse or a ground is done a certain way, there is no room for shortcuts. That is how we became the master of our domain, and it is why other installers come to us to learn.

  • 35+ years at the same Riverside location, with the same standards.
  • We train installers, so our own team works to a teaching standard every day.
  • Engineering first: we measure, calculate and test instead of guessing.
  • One shop for the whole vehicle: audio, lighting, security, tint, PPF, wraps, wheels, tires and suspension under one roof.
  • Flexible payments with financing and leasing options.
