Long drives to Big Bear, Vegas or the coast go a lot smoother when everyone in the back seat is happy. That is why rear-seat entertainment is one of the most requested upgrades for family SUVs, minivans, trucks and Sprinter vans. Modern systems are far more than a DVD player: today’s overhead and headrest screens stream Netflix, YouTube and Disney+, mirror phones, play games, and connect wireless headphones so the driver can still enjoy quiet up front. At Advanced Car Stereo Riverside, we design and install rear-seat entertainment systems that look factory, work reliably and integrate with your vehicle.
This guide explains the types of rear-seat entertainment, how the technology works, the brands we recommend from value to luxury, and how our team installs a system safely and cleanly. You can spread the cost with our financing options.
Types of rear-seat entertainment systems
Headrest monitors
Headrest systems place a screen in the back of each front headrest. There are two main styles. Replacement headrests swap your factory headrest for a matching one with a built-in screen, finished in leather or cloth to match your interior. Attach-on headrest monitors mount to the headrest posts and can be removed. Replacement headrests give the cleanest, most factory-looking result.
Overhead (flip-down) monitors
Overhead monitors mount to the headliner and fold down when in use. They allow a larger screen, often 13″ to 17″, that everyone in the second and third row can see. They are ideal for minivans, full-size SUVs and Sprinter vans.
Seat-back and custom panel screens
In vans, limos and custom builds, screens can be built into seat backs, walls or custom panels, sometimes paired with a full audio and lighting system. See our Sprinter van upgrade guide for examples.
Tablet mounts
The simplest option is a secure tablet mount on the headrest posts, with a hardwired USB-C charger so the tablet never dies. It is affordable, but it does not offer shared content, wireless audio or the clean look of an integrated system.
How modern rear-seat entertainment works
Smart (Android-based) screens
Many current headrest and overhead monitors run an Android-based operating system. With Wi-Fi, they can stream from apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Disney+ and others, just like a tablet. Each screen can play its own content or share the same movie.
Internet connection
Streaming needs data. Most families use their phone’s hotspot or the vehicle’s built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. For heavy streaming, a dedicated mobile router with its own data plan gives better coverage and keeps your phone free. We help you choose the right connection.
Screen mirroring and HDMI
Many systems support wireless screen mirroring from phones, plus HDMI inputs for game consoles like Nintendo Switch. That flexibility is what makes a system useful for years.
Audio: wireless headphones, FM and the vehicle speakers
Rear-seat audio can play through wireless IR or Bluetooth headphones so the front stays quiet, through an FM transmitter into the vehicle’s radio, or through a wired audio input into an aftermarket head unit. When we integrate the system with the stereo, everyone can hear the movie through the car speakers on demand. If you are upgrading the front too, see our CarPlay and screen upgrades.
Power
Screens draw power from an ignition-switched circuit so they turn on and off with the vehicle and cannot drain the battery. We fuse every circuit properly and use the correct add-a-fuse taps or dedicated feeds.
Brands we recommend, from value to luxury
Rockville
Rockville offers affordable headrest and overhead monitors, including Android-based smart screens. It is a solid value option for families who want streaming without a premium price.
Alpine
Alpine is one of the most trusted names in mobile video. Their flip-down overhead monitors and vehicle-specific rear-seat systems are known for excellent picture quality, clean design and dependable integration, especially with Alpine head units.
Rosen
Rosen built its reputation on factory-quality, vehicle-specific rear-seat entertainment. Their AV7900-series headrest systems and overhead monitors are designed to look like they came from the factory, with matching materials and colors. Rosen is a premium choice for luxury SUVs and trucks.
Voxx / Audiovox
Voxx (Audiovox) has supplied rear-seat entertainment to automakers for years. Their aftermarket headrest and overhead systems bring OEM-level engineering, and we have reviewed their products before, such as the Audiovox AMAVXSB10UHD2.
Power Acoustik
Power Acoustik offers a wide range of overhead and headrest monitors with large screens at accessible prices, making them a popular choice for vans and large SUVs.
The luxury build
A luxury system pairs replacement headrests stitched to match your seats with a large overhead screen, a dedicated mobile router, premium wireless headphones, and integration with a high-end audio system. For Escalade, Range Rover, G-Class, Suburban, Tahoe and Sprinter owners, this is the upgrade that turns a road trip into a first-class experience.
Vehicles we upgrade most often
- Family SUVs: Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Expedition, Explorer, Highlander, Pilot, Telluride, Palisade.
- Luxury SUVs: Escalade, Navigator, Range Rover, Mercedes GLS and G-Class, BMW X5 and X7.
- Minivans: Sienna, Odyssey, Pacifica, Carnival.
- Trucks: crew-cab F-150, Silverado, Sierra, Ram and Tundra.
- Vans: Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster conversions and executive vans.
How we install rear-seat entertainment
- Consultation. Who rides in back, what they watch, how you connect to the internet and what audio setup you want.
- Vehicle check. We look at headrest design, side airbags, headliner construction and the electrical system. Some headrests contain active safety features; we choose solutions that keep them working.
- Matching. For replacement headrests, we match materials and colors to your interior.
- Wiring. Power, video and audio cables are routed hidden behind panels, through seat tracks with service loops so seats still move freely, and away from airbags and moving parts.
- Overhead mounting. For flip-down monitors, we build or use a vehicle-specific bracket and secure it to the roof structure, not just the headliner.
- Integration. We connect audio to the head unit or set up FM and wireless headphones, and we pair the screens with your Wi-Fi source.
- Testing. We test every source, every screen and every audio path before you leave, and we show you how everything works.
Safety and the law
California law prohibits video screens that are visible to the driver while driving, other than navigation, vehicle information and similar functions. Rear-seat screens are placed so they cannot be seen from the driver’s seat. We also make sure no installation interferes with airbags, seat sensors or seatbelt systems.
Planning your system: screens, resolution and placement
A good rear-seat system starts with the right screen for the space. Headrest screens are usually 10″ to 13″, which is ideal for one viewer per seat. Overhead screens range from about 10″ to 19″; the larger the vehicle and the farther the viewers sit, the larger the screen should be. Look for at least full HD resolution, an IPS panel for wide viewing angles so passengers on the sides can see clearly, and good brightness so the picture holds up on sunny Inland Empire afternoons. Touchscreens are great for headrests, while overhead units are typically controlled with a remote.
Placement matters too. Overhead monitors must clear the rear-view mirror view and must not interfere with sunroofs, dome lights or curtain airbags. Headrest screens must sit at a comfortable viewing height for the passengers who will use them most, which is why we ask about the ages and heights of your passengers.
Integrating with factory entertainment systems
Some vehicles come with factory rear-seat entertainment. Many of those systems use older DVD players, low-resolution screens and outdated software that cannot stream modern apps. In many cases we can upgrade or replace the factory screens with modern smart screens, keep the factory headphones or connect new ones, and keep the system looking original. In other vehicles, factory screens can be paired with a modern streaming source. We evaluate what your vehicle has and recommend the cleanest path.
Executive vans and limo builds
For executive Sprinter vans, limousines and VIP shuttles, rear-seat entertainment is part of a larger system: a large overhead or wall-mounted TV, a premium audio system with a separate rear zone, ambient and starlight lighting, USB-C charging at every seat, Wi-Fi and sometimes a privacy partition with an intercom. These are full engineering projects that combine audio, video, lighting and electrical work, which is exactly what our team does every day. See our van, mobile home and marine upgrades.
Headphones and accessories
The right headphones make a big difference for kids and adults. We recommend dual-channel wireless headphones so two passengers can listen to different screens, with comfortable padding and volume limits for children. Hardwired USB-C charging ports, secure cable management and screen protectors complete the system.
What affects the cost of rear-seat entertainment
Several factors shape the price of a system. The number of screens and their size is the biggest one: two headrest screens cost less than two headrests plus a large overhead monitor. Replacement headrests matched to your leather cost more than attach-on monitors, but they look factory. Streaming hardware, such as a dedicated mobile router, adds cost but gives the best experience on long trips. Integration with an aftermarket or factory audio system, premium wireless headphones and the complexity of your vehicle’s seats and headliner also play a role. We give you options at several levels so you can choose what fits, and our financing options let you spread the cost.
Why not just buy a cheap kit online?
Online kits often use low-resolution screens, weak mounts that rattle, and cigarette-lighter power cords that dangle across the seats. Worse, some are installed in ways that interfere with headrest safety features or airbags. A professional installation hides every wire, uses correct power circuits, and keeps your vehicle’s safety systems intact. It also comes with a warranty and a shop you can return to.
Frequently asked questions
Can my kids watch different movies on each screen?
Yes. Most smart headrest systems let each screen play its own content, or both can share the same source.
Do I need a data plan?
To stream, yes. Many families use the phone hotspot or the vehicle’s built-in Wi-Fi. You can also download content for offline viewing on many apps.
Will it look factory?
With replacement headrests or vehicle-specific overhead monitors, yes. We match materials and hide all wiring.
Can we play video games?
Yes. Many systems include HDMI inputs for consoles.
Can I finance the system?
Yes. See our financing and leasing options, including no credit check programs. Financing is subject to approval.
What makes us different: Riverside’s only shop with its own installer school
A rear-seat system touches airbags, seat sensors, power circuits and audio integration. Doing that safely and cleanly takes real training.
We are the only shop in Riverside that runs its own hands-on installer school. Our Master Car Audio Installation Boot Camp teaches students the craft inside our working shop: power and ground, wire gauge and voltage-drop math, signal flow, amplifier classes and gain setting with a meter, enclosure design, DSP tuning with an RTA, and professional troubleshooting. We also run car audio installation workshops, 3-day window tint and vehicle wrap courses, and MECP training.
Why does that matter to you as a customer? Because a shop that teaches the trade has to master it first. Every method we teach is a method we use on your vehicle, and our instructors are working installers who are on the shop floor the rest of the week. When you have to explain to a classroom why a connection, a fuse or a ground is done a certain way, there is no room for shortcuts. That is how we became the master of our domain, and it is why other installers come to us to learn.
- 35+ years at the same Riverside location, with the same standards.
- We train installers, so our own team works to a teaching standard every day.
- Engineering first: we measure, calculate and test instead of guessing.
- One shop for the whole vehicle: audio, lighting, security, tint, PPF, wraps, wheels, tires and suspension under one roof.
- Flexible payments with financing and leasing options.
